Speculations continue to swirl regarding whether Arsenal’s manager, Arsene Wenger would quit at the expiration of his contract with the Gunners come the end of the season, with the club facing its worst spell under the Frenchman, of defeat after defeat recently. While the pressure on the manager has grown considerably following their recent loss to West Brom in the English Barclay’s premier league, one of the best performers of the team Hector Belerin has come out to identify with his coach and has declared that recent interests in his services do not thrill him so much because of a deep sense of loyalty he has for Wenger.
Belerin has been rumoured to be interesting Spanish giants Barcelona for who he featured in the club’s youth academy before joining Arsenal as a teenager.
Regarding his future, Belerin says that the future of Arsene Wenger would determine whether he remains with Arsenal.
“The loyalty one has to a person is worth more than money, it is something that is very important for me. And he, being there carries a lot of weight for me,” he told Mundo Deportivo from Spain training camp.
Belerin’s loyalty towards a man and club that were brave enough to take him under their wings and give him the chance to shine at the highest level of football, which playing in the Champions League and English are, deserves commendation, and is instructive for many young grassroots players.
Unfortunately, many young players lack an understanding of the concept of loyalty and how to abide by it. A lot of them, after having been catered for and given the opportunity to grow by being featured regularly, jump at the next big club that comes calling without giving a hoot about what their clubs thinks.
At the grassroots level here, we find cases where many different coaches get mired in disputes over ownership of players and when you dig deep you will find that beneath it is the issue of a player’s unfaithfulness to the club that gave him a break.
In an earlier article I had argued that coaching young players should go beyond teaching technical stuff. Ideals like loyalty should be incorporated as well so that they can be better all round individuals.
Another example of a player who showed good loyalty to his grassroots club is Isaac Success of English premier league outfit Watford. Given a platform to play in local and national competitions by BJ Foundation, a grassroots side, Success rose to national fame with an invitation to the national Under 17 team.
Different agents and football clubs all lined up to price him away from BJ so they could enjoy the largesse of the youngsters impending move to Europe. Even a certain famous national music artiste was reportedly used to lure Success to drop BJ and his personal agent. But he stuck to his guns and insisted that BJ must enjoy the fruits of their labour on him. Today the club is a richer club by virtue of Isaac Success’ loyalty.
Well done, Hector; well done, Success.
