The Confederation of African Football will on Thursday hold elections to usher in a new executive council and possibly a new President.
The race for the Presidency is between incumbent Issa Hayatou and Madagascar FA Chairman, Ahmad Ahmad.
Hayatou is seeking an 8th term in office while Ahmad is seeking to become the first man to defat the Cameroonian since 1988.
Nigeria’s FA Chief, Amaju Pinnick has already voiced his support for Ahmad but his decision has been severely criticised.
The Nigerian Division of the executive committee of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) on its part has thrown its weight behind Hayatou.
In a statement, the Nigerian Division of the CAF executive committee says Pinnick’s decision was a personal opinion and does not reflect the view of the Nigerian football Federation or Nigerians.
The members pledged their ‘unalloyed support’ to Issa Hayatou and praised the Cameroonian for developing African football.
Also, on Wednesday, Sports Minister Solomon Dalung directed Pinnick to vote for Issa Hayatou in Thursday’s CAF Presidential election.
Dalung in his directive says it is important Nigeria supports Hayatou’s bid owing to Cameroun’s continuous support of Nigeria’s war against Boko Haram.
He had previously advised Pinnick to vote for any candidate who he feels will serve Nigeria better but has now taken sides with Issa Hayatou, a Cameroonian.
The elections will be a secret ballot and the winner must win an absolute majority (half the votes plus one) to be declared winner.
Fifty-three of the fifty-four member associations of CAF are expected to vote in the election meaning the winner must secure the votes of at least 27 countries. (TV360 Nigeria)
