Nigerian junior international Douglas Uzama, who was killed in Benin City by unknown gunmen on Thursday, December 29, 2016 has been committed to mother earth.
The solemn burial took place at the Benin cemetery and had in attendance friends and family members of the slain star. Tears flowed, shrieks pierced ears while curses rained down on the killers of the youngster who was in the payroll of Nigerian premier league side Gombe United FC before his death.
The burial occasion sparked a Facebook meltdown as friends and ex-teammates, still in shock over the killing of the player, paid their tributes.
Bright Osazuwa, a former teammate of Uzama in Dynamite Force FC, an amateur outfit based in Benin City, wrote: “Aoooh! Douglas, better left fullback, better person, better footballer may your soul rest in peace till we meet again. I can’t imagine myself seeing you like this (in a casket), So painful Douglas, who killed you will never know peace in Jesus name and may God vengeance come to them, amen. Rest on my ex team mate.”
Former Nigerian Under-17 midfielder Promise Orji, who was part of the Golden Eaglets squad that won the cadet World Cup two years ago, posted on Facebook: “He was a brother, a friend n a very good teammate . . . Pains in my heart, tears in my eyes ’cause we didn’t have much time to share and enjoy our labour . . . you are gone but forever you will live in my heart . . . I love you brother and will definitely miss you . . . rest in peace Douglas Uzama . . . God loves you more.”
One Judith Ogechi said: “What a painful death. Goodnight.”
One guy, commenting on Orji’s post, went philosophical about the picture of Uzama in the post. The photo had the late star putting on a beautiful pair of sports shoes and jeans. He said: “Can you imagine his nice pair of shoes, his belt and clothes . . . So he’s dead? This life, like one old man told me, is an illusion! Nothing lasts forever.”
Douglas Uzama was 18 years old.
