Following the CAF Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday at the Sheraton Hotel in Addis Ababa, the continental governing body has announced that Franceville and Port Gentil will be the host cities for the upcoming AFCON U17 from May 14 – 28.
The two-week continental showpiece that was scheduled to be held from May 21 – June 4 has been moved a week earlier and will clash with the FIFA U-20 World Cup that will take place in South Korea from May 20 – June 11.
This is as a result of CAF’s withdrawal of the tournament from Madagascar whose Government failed to commit to hosting the AFCON U17 and forced the former to call for new bids with Gabon beating Sudan to a vote of 8-6 last month.
Both cities hosted games during the AFCON 2017 from January 14 – February 7 with Group B playing in the eastern city of Franceville while Group D featured in the oil-rich city of Port Gentil.
Stade de Franceville and Stade de Port Gentil both host 20,000 spectators apiece. Hosts Gabon, Cameroon, Guinea and Ghana are in Group A while defending champions Mali, Angola, Niger and Tanzania are in Group B. (©supersport.com)
