Following numerous complaints of non receipt of copies of contracts from players registered to participate in the Nigeria National League 2016/2017 season which is scheduled to kick start on the 17th of March 2017.
Contrary to the relevant provisions of league rules that makes it compulsory for clubs to give players copies of their contracts, the Nigeria Players Union NANPF is requesting the NNL to make available copies of players contract in the NNL to the union for onward distribution to the players.
A statement issued on Sunday in Lagos by NANPF General Secretary, Comrade Austin Popo, indicated that the union request is to enable all parties, especially the players be aware of the details of the content of the contract they have entered into to forestall situations “such as that of Otegbeye Ajibola of ABS currently under suspension by the LMC for signing to play for Sunshine FC in the current league season while still having a running contract till 2017. The player on the other hand believed his contract with ABS has expired last season.
“Furthermore, it is imperative that there are no discrepancies in the contract to avoid feeding the wrong information into the Domestic Transfer Matching System (DTMS) thereby making the process unreliable and with the potential danger of causing great harm and injury to the players’ career and future.”
In a related development, the union also request NNL to ensure that the following clubs who are still indebted to their former or current players are not allowed to participate in the league until they liquidate their debts to the affected players and coaches. Some of the affected clubs include, Bayelsa United, Warri Wolves, Kwara United, Taraba United and Akwa Starlet who have bought new slots to feature in the NNL and a host of others.
