Edo grassroots clubs record interesting results in friendly games as FA Cup preparations reach top gear

Football Clubs around the country are getting set for the Nigerian FA Cup, which is scheduled to hold in the states from 29th March to 29th April. In Edo State many grassroots clubs as well as the national amateur side Dynamite Force FC and pro division 1 club, Bendel Insurance FC are gearing up for the Edo Challenge Cup with some interesting friendly games already played.

One of the in-form sides is Saviour's FC. The club, located in the Dumez Road area of southeast Benin City have played against Bendel Insurance and Dynamite Force (who are the two highest ranked teams in Edo State) and won both games.

Saviour's FC, who finished an impressive 3rd in last year's Edo FA state league, beat Insurance at their Emotan Grammar School training pitch 1-0 a few weeks ago. And just last Friday, they recorded a 2-1 win against Dynamite Force at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

Savior's are noted for their nice passing game which has won them admiration from many football watchers. They are coached by Pius Ehigiator, a man with an impressive playing CV, having had a stints with a number of top (some are now defunct) Nigerian clubs.

Meanwhile, after suffering the shocking loss to Saviour's, Insurance have bounced back with victories in their other friendly matches including a 5-1 hammering of Edo State league reigning kings, Benin Warriors FC. Former Warriors midfielder Emmanuel Iyogun scored for Insurance against his former team in the rout.

Insurance are also preparing for the start of the nationwide Division 1 Season and a lot of unsigned players are currently battling to become salary earners in the Edo state government sponsored team.

An official of Insurance told me that the club has already made up its mind on the makeup of the team and they are just looking to see if an exceptional striker would become available.

Meanwhile, Benin Warriors drew 1-1 away to another grassroots outfit, Konkon FC in a thrilling game marked by nice passing football from the very young Warriors team that was fielded for the game.
