John Fashanu, former Wimbledon and England football star, has commended the recent appointment by the world Football governing body FIFA of the Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick into the highly revered Organising Committee for Competitions (OCC). According to Fashanu, Amaju deserves the appointment having worked so hard over the years for the development of the game in the country.
Speaking exclusively to Daily Sports, the Soccer Ambassador as he is popularly called, explained that he is very excited and happy for the NFF’s Chairman, because he is someone he has known over the years saying Amaju works and sleeps football.
“I think the recent appointment of Amaju Pinnick to the respected FIFA Organising Committee for Competitions is very commendable. It is a well-deserved appointment,” Fashanu declared. “I have known Amaju for years. He has worked hard for the development of the game in the country and as a result I think that his appointment into the exalted FIFA Organising Committee for Competitions is a recognition of his untiring efforts in making sure that the game of football is taken to new height.
“I think he is a great guy. He is someone who eats and sleeps football. He has great passion for the game and its development so I congratulate him on this recognition by FIFA.”
On what the country stands to gain from Amaju’s FIFA appointment, Fashanu said we should wait and see in the next two years to know what his elevation is going to bring to the country.
“I think that we should wait and see in the next two years to know what impact his elevation is going to bring to the country. It is not something we should be worrying ourselves with at the moment,” Fashanu explained.
It is recalled that the recent appointment into FIFA’s revered Organising Committee for Competitions has divided Nigerians as some commended it while others do not feel that Amaju deserves such an elevation, considering the fact that he sat over the failure of Nigeria to qualify for two Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea in 2015 and 2017 in Gabon. So, for this group of people the Delta State born sports administrator does not deserve the appointment while others see it from a different perceptive.
