Russia bans Olympic champion for doping

By Daily Sports on February 1, 2017

The Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) on Tuesday said Bobsleigh Federation has banned 2014 Olympic champion Dmitry Trunenkov for four years due to a positive doping test.

Doping refers to the use of banned athletic performance-enhancing drugs by athletic competitors, where the term doping is widely used by organisations that regulate sporting competitions.

The use of banned drugs to enhance performance is considered unethical, and therefore prohibited, by most international sports organizations, including the International Olympic Committee.

Trunenkov, who was part of the victorious four-man bob team at the Sochi Games, tested positive for an unnamed banned substance in 2016.

His ban has been back-dated to start on April 19, 2016, though he has subsequently retired.

Report says the result of the 2014 Olympic competition is not being questioned so the ban does not affect Trunenkov’s gold medal.

RUSADA also announced bans for doping violations for two wrestlers, two from athletics, a weightlifter and a rower. (NAN)
