The last season victory that Sunday Odegha snapped up at the Lamingo Golf Course in Jos penultimate week has placed him a notch above Andrew Odoh as he ends the year 2016 as the number one player in the closing Order of Merit released by the Professional Golfers’ Association of Nigeria (PGAN).
“It was a great year,” said Odegha to www.pganigeria.com, adding that he only featured in four events on the PGA calendar.
He said: “I finished runner up to Oche (Odoh) in Otukpo in April. I was ninth at the CMCL Open in May. I lost the Ojerinde Memorial on playoff to Vincent Torgah in July before the win at the Plateau State Governors Cup in December.”
The win in Plateau was the first win in five years for Odegha who has had to struggle with different aspects of his game.
“I guess I got a number of things together early in 2016, when I went to South Africa for one-month training. It was refreshing and most especially brought my game back on course,” he said.
Odegha’s did not feature in two ranking events in Port Harcourt and in Aba but says it is not the number of events that matter but the state of one’s confidence leading to the event that count.
Oche Odoh who simply could have led the year having had more wins preferred to strengthen his standing on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa and the West Africa Golf Tour, (where he ranks 111th and 1st respectively).
According to him, “I am happy for Odegha, he was brilliant this season and I hope this inspires more great play in the coming year for him. We grew up together and I am happy his game is gradually returning to shape. He is such a great player and we have not seen the best of him.”
Vincent Torgah is placed third courtesy of his win at the Memorial Championship where he, of course, checked Odegha on play off, his only other appearance on the Nigerian Tour was at the CMCL Open, where he also finished within top-ten.
Izang Ayuba the 2014 Q-School Champion finished the year in fourth place, the biggest stand in his young career. This is courtesy many strong postings during the year and eventually his brilliant finish that fetched him the 21st Air Assault Open at the expense of Emeka Obi and Friday Akpodiette. The complete top-ten is listed below:
1st – ODEGHA Sundau Joseph
2nd – ODOH Andrew Odoh
3rd – TORGAH VINCENT
4th – IZANG AYUBA
5th – OLAPADE SUNDAY
6th – ABUBAKAR Mustapha
7th – OBI Emeka Andrew
