The Main Organising Committee (MOC) the maiden edition of President Muhammadu Buhari National Youth Open Water Swimming Championship has been inaugurated in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.
The 13-man Committee, which is chaired by Senator Kabiru Gaya includes prominent individuals such as the President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAquF), and Dr. Are among others. The Minister of Sports and Youth Development who is also a member of the committee performed the inauguration in Abuja last week.
The Minister, who was visibly excited during the inauguration of the MOC charged the committee to work acidulously to ensure the success of the championship. He explained that one good thing about the President Muhammadu Buhari National Youth Open Swimming Championship is that the Federal Government will not spend a dime in it as it will be financed by friends and well wishers of Mr. President.
The Honourable Minister also explained that it is aimed at positioning the country for the 2020 Olympics.
“I want to charge you to spare nothing in ensuring that this maiden edition of President Muhammadu Buhari National Youth Open Water Swimming Championship is a success. I can assure you that Mr. President is looking forward to a successful championship that is why you must work hard to ensure that that goal is achieved,” Dalung stated.
“More importantly, I wish to let you know that the Federal Government is not going to spend a dime for this championship. It is going to be funded by people and organizations who sincerely believe in the vision of Mr. President.
“The funds for this maiden edition of President Muhammadu Buhari National Youth Open Water Swimming championship will come from outside the government coffers. It will come from individuals, friends and organisations that appreciate, believe and love what President Buhari is doing for the county.
“Meanwhile, this championship is aimed at positioning the country for the 2020 Olympics,” Dalung explained.
When The Oracle Sports called on the President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation to ascertain whether the championship will hold as originally slated for 2016, he explained that the Federation is looking forward to having it either in January or February 2017.
According to him the Federation is looking forward to the championship but the condition must certainly be right for it to take place. He cited weather as one of the two factors that they have to take into cognisance before they will call swimmers to camp for the championship. The other factor he made mention of was funds for the championship as the Federation wouldn’t want to default in settling the entitlements of swimmers, officials and others who will be involved in championship.
