Algeria star Riyad Mahrez and Sadio Mane of Liverpool and Senegal will challenge reigning CAF African Player of the Year Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for this year’s top individual accolade.
Aubameyang was the shock winner of last year’s CAF Player of the Year ahead of the favourite Yaya Toure.
The Gabon and Borussia Dortmund star will this year be challenged for the top continental gong by Mahrez, who helped little Leicester City win the Premier League against all odds, and Mane, who has shone at Liverpool after he moved from Southampton.
Mahrez has already been adjudged the best African player of the year by BBC.
For the best African-based player award, 2016 CAF Champions League Mamelodi Sundowns stars Khama Billiat and Denis Onyango will slug it out with Zambia skipper Rainford Kalaba, who has been outstanding for CAF Confederation Cup winners TP Mazembe.
The awards ceremony will be staged next month in Nigeria’s capital city Abuja. (mtnfootball.com)
