Ex-boxing champ held for alleged sexual abuse

Former welterweight world champion Carlos Baldomir of Argentina has been arrested on suspicion of sexual offenses involving a minor, prosecutors said.

Baldomir, 45, was arrested in Buenos Aires, said the prosecutor in the case, Omar de Pedro.

De Pedro said the alleged offenses were of a sexual nature but he did not give details.

But he told TV channel TN on Friday the offenses involved a minor.

Alejandro Otte, the lawyer for the alleged victim, said the abuse took place three to five years ago.

The girl told her mother, who filed a complaint. Otte said he did not know if there are other victims.

Baldomir won the welterweight title in 2006 and retired from the ring in 2014.

“Psychiatric tests were carried out. The minor’s account is consistent and reasonable,” said de Pedro.

Baldomir will be taken to his native province of Sa Fe, where the abuse is alleged to have occurred, to have the charges read to him by a judge. The hearing will determine whether he remains in custody.

Baldomir held the world title for 11 months after beating Zab Judah in New York in 2006.

But he lost it that same year to Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas.

In his career, Baldomir had 49 wins (19 KOs), 16 defeats and six draws.

Baldomir recently won an award from the Argentine congress for his achievements as an athlete. (NAN)
