Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Hector Bellerin is set to be sidelined for around four weeks after picking up a knock against Tottenham.
The Spanish full-back suffered ankle ligament damage during the 1-1 draw with Spurs prior to the international break.
Wenger told a press conference on Thursday: “Hector is out for about four weeks. He was injured in the last 10 seconds against Spurs.”
The news comes as an untimely blow to Arsenal’s 2016-17 aspirations, with the Gunners having made a productive start to their campaign both at home and abroad.
An unbeaten run that stretches back to the opening day of the season has them positioned just two points off the pace in the Premier League title race and already assured of a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Kicking on from this point is the challenge facing Wenger’s troops, but they will have to try and do so without the services of Bellerin.
The 21-year-old has been a regular once again for the Gunners this season, making 14 appearances across all competitions.
He is, however, now set for an enforced spell on the treatment table.
Arsenal will be forced to shuffle their defensive pack in his absence, starting with Saturday’s eagerly-anticipated Premier League clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Should that contest mark the start of a four-week absence for Bellerin, then he would also miss a number of other important fixtures.
The north Londoners have European meetings with Paris Saint-Germain and Basel on the horizon, along with league games against Bournemouth, West Ham, Stoke and Everton and an EFL Cup quarter-final duel with Southampton.
Wenger will be hoping, though, that Bellerin is back in contention for a trip to Manchester City on December 18, as Arsenal head into the busy festive period. (goal.com)
