Paul Pogba is not a “goal scorer” and is not expected to produce them, according to France coach Didier Deschamps.
The Manchester United midfielder headed in the equaliser for France as they came from behind to win 2-1 against Sweden in Paris on Friday. It followed Pogba’s impressive strike for United in a 3-1 victory at Swansea a week earlier.
Deschamps, told reporters, as quoted by AFP: “He is not a goal scorer. He can score goals and has done so, but I don’t especially expect him to do that.
“All the better that he did so but I am much more happy with his overall performance, which followed on from what he did in the Netherlands([in a 1-0 win when he also scored on Oct. 10).”
United have started using Pogba in more advanced positions but France again played him in a deeper role alongside Blaise Matuidi. France’s starting XI had an attack consisting of Olivier Giroud up front, Antoine Griezmann behind, plus Dimitri Payet and Moussa Sissoko out wide.
Deschamps said: “For Manchester [United], he is used in a different position in a different system. He gave us a lot of fluidity with the ball and was good at winning possession back.
“When Paul is playing like that and has a good partnership with Blaise Matuidi it is important for the team.
“If he scores, all the better. I know he likes scoring but it is not what I or the team expect from him.” (NAN)
