The Nigerian Professional Players Union have petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over what it described as neglect by football club owners and non-payment of their entitlements.
In a petition signed by Comrade Austin Popo, General Secretary of the union, the players said they got wind of information that with the assistance of the EFCC, some funds generated from the collective image rights of players were recovered from some league sponsors and are yet to be disbursed.
The union expressed concern over the possibility of the money being mismanaged, for which reason it petitioned the EFCC, the Trade Union Congress, League Management Company, and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), seeking the following reliefs:
That in view of the fact that the money in question was generated from the collective image rights of players, it is therefore meant primarily for players and their welfare. The union called on the EFCC to help ensure that the recovered money was used to offset at least 50 percent of the salaries owed players. It also demanded that at least 10 percent of the money should be directly made available to the association as the only recognised players union, to energise and sustain the agitation for better labour rights of players in compliance with Article 3 of FIFA statute.
Furthermore, the footballers union demanded that the balance of the above should be disbursed to the clubs, who should in turn still use the money for player’s welfare.
“That this is a rare opportunity to pay players owed and financially activate us, their players union, anything short of the this would be unjust and an affront on the spirit of the game.
“We wish to urge all football stakeholders in this country to remember that, football development in a four-way traffic, covering the players, the clubs, the administrators and the fans/general public, none should be neglected,” the union said.
