Six-time African Women’s Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, has described the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as a trophy worth fighting for despite the Super Falcons’ dominance, which has seen them win a record 10 continental titles, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Oshoala is among the early arrivals at Nigeria’s camp in Casablanca as the Super Falcons intensify preparations for the defence of their WAFCON title in Morocco.

Nigeria will head into the tournament, scheduled for July 25 to August 16, aiming to retain the title, extend their record to 11 WAFCON crowns and secure one of the qualification spots for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The forward believes every edition of the tournament should reflect the continued growth of women’s football across the continent, both on and off the pitch.

“I am looking forward to Nigeria winning it again. It’s something to always fight for, but I feel like each edition there has to be a form of improvement on and off the pitch,” Oshoala said during a CAF Media Stars Spotlight session.

“I really want to see more fans out there and it was better than the previous ones. I think more promotions for this one will preach more about African women’s football.”

The 31-year-old, who has won the competition with Nigeria in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2024, also reflected on her journey with the Super Falcons and her experiences playing abroad.

“It’s been an amazing journey for me personally having to experience all of this and playing in other continents. It’s been pretty impressive and there are always room for improvement,” she said.

The Super Falcons have been drawn in Group C alongside Malawi, Zambia and Egypt, with Justine Madugu’s side set to begin their campaign against tournament debutants Malawi in Rabat on Tuesday, July 28.

Beyond the continental title, the tournament also serves as a qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The four semi-finalists will qualify automatically, while the best-performing quarter-finalist will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs.
