Omewa brace powers Falcons past Senegal

Striker Joy Omewa scored a brace while Asisat Oshoala added a third as the Super Falcons completed a double-header sweep of Senegal with a commanding 3-0 victory in Ikenne on Monday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Nigeria had won the first meeting 2-1 on Friday, but produced a more convincing display in the return fixture as preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations gathered momentum.

As promised, coach Justine Madugu rang five changes to his starting line-up, handing starts to goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, striker Gift Monday, Omewa, Rinsola Babajide and Rofiat Imuran.

Nigeria started brightly and won an early set-piece through captain Rasheedat Ajibade in the opening minute, but the opportunity came to nothing. The Super Falcons continued to press, with Omewa narrowly missing another chance moments later.

Despite their dominance, the deadlock remained intact through the opening stages. In the 13th minute, another opportunity went begging as an effort was dragged wide with the goal at Nigeria’s mercy.

Monday proved a constant threat, repeatedly troubling the Senegalese defence while the home crowd urged the team on. Omewa came agonisingly close in the 15th minute when she rounded the goalkeeper, only to see her effort strike the woodwork as the first half ended goalless.

The breakthrough finally arrived three minutes into the second half. In the 48th minute, Shukurat Oladipo delivered a precise cross which Omewa met with a powerful header to give Nigeria a deserved lead.

Buoyed by the opener, the Super Falcons grew in confidence and control. Omewa doubled the advantage in the 55th minute, muscling her way through the Teranga Lionesses’ backline before finishing with composure for her second goal of the match.

Nigeria’s dominance was further underlined in the 66th minute when Ajibade embarked on a surging run and set up substitute Asisat Oshoala, who had replaced Omewa, to slot home and make it 3-0.

The result sealed a 5-1 aggregate victory for the Super Falcons as they wrapped up their preparations ahead of next month’s continental showpiece.

The 2026 WAFCON will kick off on July 25 and run until August 16 in Morocco. The Super Falcons, who are chasing a record-extending 11th continental title, have been drawn in Group C alongside Egypt, Zambia and debutants Malawi, while Senegal will face hosts Morocco, Algeria and Kenya in Group A.
