Tabugbo eyes Commonwealth Games success

By Daily Sports Nigeria on May 19, 2026

Nigeria’s Adaobi Tabugbo has shifted her attention towards the Commonwealth Games following her breakthrough performance at the African Athletics Championships in Accra, where she won bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles behind compatriot Tobi Amusan, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Tabugbo secured her first individual medal for Nigeria at the continental championships after finishing third in the final, with world record holder Amusan delivering the country’s first gold medal of the competition.

Ashley Miller denied Nigeria a one-two finish by placing ahead of Tabugbo.

The Nigerian hurdler described the achievement as a major moment in her career and revealed that preparations for the Commonwealth Games were already underway, with the Glasgow event now becoming a key target for her this season.

“Right now, it means everything to me. I’m so grateful. God is so good. I’ll be very prepared for the Commonwealth Games because it’s so early in the season and I understand,” she told AFN Media.

Tabugbo also credited Amusan for playing a significant role in her development, describing the reigning world champion as a major source of inspiration and encouragement within the national team setup.

According to her, competing alongside Amusan has motivated her to continue striving for higher achievements in athletics while benefiting from the experience and presence of one of the sport’s biggest stars.

She further praised the atmosphere within Team Nigeria’s camp in Accra, highlighting the unity and positive energy among the athletes ahead of future international competitions.

“The spirit within the camp is great. I love being around the team. It is so jovial. I just want to be around them,” she added.

With the Commonwealth Games set for July 2026, Tabugbo’s performance in Accra has strengthened hopes that she could emerge as one of Nigeria’s medal contenders in the hurdles event as she continues her rise on the international stage.
