Nigeria’s high jumper and national record holder, Temitope Adeshina, has won the International Student-Athlete Excellence Award in the women’s category at the 2026 Red & Black Gala of Texas Tech, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Adeshina was one of the 59 recipients honoured at the event, held on Monday evening in recognition of their achievements over the past year.
The 27-year-old is undefeated this season in the high jump, winning each competition with a clearance of at least 1.93m (6-4) or higher.
She won the Big 12 title earlier this season, clearing 1.96m (6-5¼) to claim her third straight indoor title. She also added the NCAA indoor title weeks later.
In the outdoor season, Adeshina has maintained her impressive run in the women’s high jump, clearing 1.95m (6-4¾) to claim victory at the Mt. SAC Relays held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, California, in April.
The three-time Nigerian national champion, who holds a personal best and national record of 1.97m, remains unbeaten this season and is in pursuit of her first outdoor title.
Following her breakthrough in 2024, when she set national records, she went on to win her first NCAA title in 2025. She also featured at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she finished outside the podium places.
She is the second Nigerian to compete in the women’s high jump at the Olympics after Doreen Amata, who represented the country at the 2008 and 2016 Games.
Adeshina won her first NCAA title in March 2025, clearing 1.94m at the NCAA Indoor Championships held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia, USA, becoming the first Nigerian to win an NCAA high jump title.
