Ukah faces Osigwe in historic all-Nigerian PFL clash

Nigeria’s Juliet Ukah will face compatriot Jane Osigwe in a landmark all-Nigerian strawweight bout when the Professional Fighters League returns to the SunBet Arena for its Africa season two opener on Friday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 115-pound contest marks a significant moment for Nigerian mixed martial arts, with both fighters set to share the cage on a card headlined by bantamweight champion Nkosi Ndebele against Italy’s Michele Clemente, while Justin Clarke faces Senegal’s Abdoulaye Kane in the co-main event.

Ukah, a corporal in the Nigeria Police Force, enters the contest unbeaten with an 8-0 professional record and two victories under the PFL Africa banner.

The 26-year-old has emerged as one of the continent’s leading figures in women’s MMA, having defeated Ceileigh Niedermayr and Maryam Gaber in 2025, the latter via first-round stoppage at the Africa Finals in Cotonou.

Reflecting on her journey into the sport, Ukah explained that her career began unexpectedly after stepping in as a late replacement for a bout in Cameroon in 2022, despite having limited knowledge of the sport at the time.

Speaking ahead of the clash in Pretoria, Ukah highlighted the broader significance of the event for women’s MMA on the continent, expressing confidence in its impact.

“I want to say it’s going to be a great, massive explosion, because it’s going to be something good that women in MMA in Africa are looking up to. It’s something we’re going to grow, and not just in Africa – we’re going to take over the continent and the world very soon,” she said.

She also addressed the expectations that come with her rising profile, describing herself as a trailblazer for female fighters.

“I would say, for example, I’m like a pioneer, an ambassador for all women in martial arts in Africa and Nigeria,” she added.

“It could be pressure, as you say, but for me it’s not pressure. It’s something that reminds me I need to work hard every day to keep that standard going and to find a way to keep myself going, no matter what comes up.”

On the prospect of facing a fellow Nigerian, Ukah described the moment as both an honour and a sign of progress for the sport. She noted that the increasing presence of Nigerian fighters reflects the growth of MMA at home.

“It’s a great pleasure, not just having only me on the card but having other Nigerians too. It’s an honour because I started it, so starting it, it’s a joy for me to train others and also have others coming up. In case the opportunity comes and I go global, then I know that back home we have other Nigerians who are also competing at this level.”

Osigwe, 20, enters the bout with a 5-3 record and arrives as the interim champion of African Knockout, the promotion founded by former UFC champion Kamaru Usman.

She secured the belt with a victory over Morocco’s Sanaa Mandar in Abuja and is known for her aggressive, forward-moving style and knockout power.

The contest will also be Osigwe’s debut in the PFL and a move down to strawweight, where she is expected to test Ukah’s composure with pace and volume. While Ukah typically adopts a measured, kick-based approach with strong takedown defence, Osigwe prefers to close distance and engage in high-intensity exchanges.

Ukah, however, insisted her focus remains on delivering an improved performance rather than analysing her opponent publicly.

“I don’t know much about my opponent. I expect my fans to watch and believe I have come to give them an even better fighter than before,” she said.

With both fighters representing a new generation of Nigerian talent, the clash in Pretoria is expected to be a defining moment for the growth of women’s MMA on the continent.
