EKO HOT BLOG   reports that the proposed friendly is expected to take place on June 6, with Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, pencilled down as the likely venue. Discussions between the Nigeria Football Federation and the Portuguese Football Federation are said to be at an advanced stage, with both parties working towards finalising the details in the coming weeks.

The match is expected to serve as a key preparatory fixture for both teams as they gear up for crucial World Cup qualifying games. With the 2026 tournament expanded to include more teams, national sides are intensifying efforts to test their readiness against strong opposition.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have continued to attract international attention following their impressive performances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The team earned widespread praise for their defensive discipline, attacking balance and improved tactical organisation throughout the tournament.

Their strong showing at AFCON has reportedly made Nigeria a preferred opponent for several top European teams seeking competitive friendlies ahead of the World Cup. Facing Portugal would provide the Super Eagles with another opportunity to measure their progress against elite opposition.

Portugal last played Nigeria in an international friendly in November 2022, when the European side recorded a 4 0 victory. Bruno Fernandes, Gonçalo Ramos and João Mário were among the goalscorers as Portugal controlled the encounter.

The proposed June fixture would offer Nigeria a chance to test their current squad, fine tune tactical adjustments and possibly seek a more competitive outing against a Portuguese team filled with world class talent.

If confirmed, the friendly is expected to attract significant attention from football fans and analysts, as both teams continue preparations for football’s biggest global tournament.
