Super Eagles Attacker Awarded The Man Of The Match Award After His Excellent Display

By DailySports Nigeria on January 11, 2026

Victor Osimhen played a decisive role as Nigeria secured a 2-0 victory over Algeria in their Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash on Saturday, earning a place in the semi-finals against tournament hosts Morocco.

The Super Eagles controlled much of the opening half in Marrakesh, dictating play and pinning Algeria back, but went into the break without a goal to show for their dominance.

That changed almost immediately after the restart, when Osimhen rose highest to head Nigeria into the lead just two minutes into the second half.

The reigning African Footballer of the Year then shifted from scorer to creator shortly before the hour mark.

After drawing defenders toward him, Osimhen released a well-timed pass that allowed Akor Adams to calmly finish and double Nigeria’s advantage, effectively ending the contest.

Nigeria arrived in Morocco determined to make amends after missing out on qualification for the next World Cup.

Having finished runners-up at the previous AFCON in Ivory Coast, the team is now firmly in contention for a fourth continental crown.

Despite playing in front of a crowd of over 32,000 largely backing Algeria, Nigeria remained composed and tactically disciplined.

The atmosphere is expected to be even more intense in Rabat when they face Morocco in the semi-final.

Algeria, champions in 2019, had enjoyed their most impressive tournament run in years, but struggled to impose themselves.

Their attacking trio failed to register a single attempt before half-time, while Nigeria came close to scoring earlier when a Calvin Bassey effort was cleared off the line.

Victor Osimhen was awarded the player of the match award after his influential performance against Algeria.

He guided the Super Eagles of Nigeria to the next round of the AFCON Competition with a goal.
