The Henrietta Ovuede Table Tennis Trophy has continued to promote unity among staff across Chrisland Schools following its fourth edition on Saturday.
French teacher Banjo Adekunle retained the title after defeating Saheed Olatilewa in straight sets, 11-5, 11-9, at the tournament, which began as a modest in-house contest at Chrisland School, Victoria Garden City.
The victory marks Adekunle’s third consecutive title. The French educator finished as runner-up in the inaugural edition before winning the next three.
“I thank God for making it possible for me to come first in this fourth edition. In the first edition, I came second, but since then, I have been winning. I’m so happy to defend my trophy again,” Adekunle said.
This year’s competition expanded to include staff from the Lekki branch of Chrisland School, marking significant growth for the tournament.
Founder Henrietta Ovuede reflected on the event’s evolution since its inception.
“It started small, just for teachers to unwind and relieve stress. Over the years, it has grown bigger,” she said.
“Last year was the height of it, and this year we extended it to Lekki schools. Next year, we hope to move it to the Island and open it up to other schools at a neutral venue.”
Executive Head of Schools for Business Development and Communications, Dr Jide Onigbogi, praised the initiative’s development.
“What began four years ago as a modest in-house competition has grown into a vibrant tournament involving staff across Chrisland schools. This remarkable growth is a testament to vision, dedication and unity,” he said.
“Sports promote fitness, wellness and camaraderie, and this event embodies all those values.”
