ICYMI: 2026 W’Cup: Nigeria, Gabon to clash in crucial playoff

By Daily Sports Nigeria on November 13, 2025

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face the Panthers of Gabon on 13 November 2025 in Rabat, Morocco, in a decisive CAF playoff tie for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup inter-confederation playoff.

Nigeria booked their place as one of the top runners-up in the African qualifiers, helped by a 4–0 victory over the Benin Republic that featured a memorable Victor Osimhen hat-trick. Gabon, meanwhile, finished strongly in Group F behind the Ivory Coast to secure their own playoff ticket.

The winner of Thursday’s clash will advance to meet either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo on 16 November, with the victor of that final heading to the inter-continental playoff stage for a possible World Cup berth.

Nigeria and Gabon share a long history dating back six decades. Out of their nine previous encounters, Nigeria have won five, with three draws and one Gabonese victory, the latter a 2-1 upset in June 1989 that ultimately denied Nigeria a place at the Italia ’90 World Cup.

The Super Eagles arrive unbeaten in their last four qualifiers and will draw confidence from their recent dominance over Gabon—three wins and a draw in their last four meetings.

Gabon, on the other hand, have impressed in attack under coach Thierry Mouyouma, scoring 22 goals in 10 qualifying matches. However, their record against Africa’s elite remains concerning, with four defeats and one draw against top-ranked teams since Mouyouma’s appointment.

Key Players to Watch

Victor Osimhen (Nigeria) – The in-form Galatasaray striker remains Nigeria’s biggest weapon. With 29 goals in 43 appearances, he is now just eight goals shy of breaking the late Rashidi Yekini’s all-time scoring record for the Super Eagles. His pace, movement, and clinical finishing will be crucial in Rabat.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon) – At 36 years old, the Olympique de Marseille forward continues to defy age. He scored all four goals in Gabon’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Gambia, keeping their World Cup hopes alive. His leadership and eye for goal make him the danger man Nigeria must contain.
