Over 100 students have competed as second edition of the Ayida Foundation Lagos Schools Tennis Tournament reaches its semi final stage after several rounds of competitive matches that have showcased the depth of young talent in Lagos State.

The competition, which is open to students in Lagos State, has witnessed impressive performances from young tennis players across various age categories, with the standard of play drawing praise from organisers and spectators alike.

Laolu Akerele, one of the committee members for the Allison Ayida Foundation, said the tournament was inspired by his grandfather’s love for tennis and passion for giving back to the community.

He noted that the standard of play has been exceptionally high, adding that the foundation aims to continue producing high-level tennis players.

“I’ve already just arrived and the level is so high. So I think the goal is to continue producing high-level tennis players because they are all around,” he told PUNCH Sports Extra.

Akerele revealed that the competition has grown significantly in size and quality since the first edition.

Addressing the challenges facing grassroots tennis development in Nigeria, he called for support from both government and private sector sponsors to help nurture young talents.

“It’s not all these kids will have access to rackets, tennis balls, even courts. So, I think people that come and watch just see the level of tennis and just contribute, whether it’s giving them free tennis lessons, free tennis courts, free equipment.

@Obviously, everyone would want money to invest in it. But I think just start at the simple things, like the club giving them free courts, people giving them free rackets, balls and anything they can do to help,” he said.

Godwin Akinfunmiloye, a 2025 National Youth Games semi-finalist, expressed satisfaction with his performance at the tournament, particularly after overcoming a more experienced opponent in the first round.

“I’ve enjoyed it a lot. After winning my first match and also my quarter-final, I was surprised that I beat him because the person I first met in the first round was a good player. He plays more than me so I was surprised that I beat him. Now that I have beaten him, I think I can win the tournament,” he said.

Akinfunmiloye also praised the organisation of the tournament, adding that he would love to participate next year.

Adesimi Olaniyan, who reached the girls’ semi-finals, described the competition as fun and exciting, noting that the set of players are very competitive.

“I found it fun, interesting and a little bit exciting with all the players here. The set of players here are very competitive,” she said.

Akerele revealed that this year’s edition will feature gift prizes for winners, with plans to introduce educational grants and support in future editions.
