Dumuije-Abili smashes swimming records in Ghana

Team Nigeria produced an outstanding performance at the 2025 Africa Zone 2 Swimming Championship in Accra, Ghana, with teenage sensation Aidan Dumuije-Abili setting five new continental records and leading a new generation of Nigerian swimmers to a historic outing, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 14-year-old dominated the junior category, winning six gold medals, one silver and one bronze, to emerge as the most valuable junior athlete of the competition.

His exceptional form lit up the pool as he powered through multiple events, shattering records and showcasing a maturity far beyond his age.

Dumuije-Abili’s highlight came in the 100m freestyle, where he clocked 55.31s to earn 610 points, one of the top times of the championship.

“Every medal means more when you’re representing your country,” he said after his final race.

“Breaking records is great, but making Nigeria proud is what matters most.”

Competing against top swimmers from West and Central Africa, Team Nigeria finished among the top three nations in the junior division, collecting a total of 30 medals, 11 gold, five silver and 14 bronze.

Also among the standout performers was 14-year-old Endurance Olise, who made a brilliant debut at the championship. Competing with poise, he won two gold medals, also establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s brightest rising prospects.

Equally impressive was 12-year-old Maryam Muhammed, one of the youngest participants in the tournament, who won medals in both her individual and team events.

In the long-distance events, Timilehin Olaya added further glory to Nigeria’s campaign, as the endurance specialist won three gold medals and set new championship records in the 800m and 1500m freestyle events.

Tofunmi Ibidapo also made a strong impression with medals across individual and relay events, while Goodluck Godwin’s energetic performances earned him selection for the World Aquatics “Future Wave” training programme, a seven-day camp for promising young athletes.

In the senior category, experienced swimmer Dorcas Oka led by example, securing podium finishes and guiding the younger athletes through their debut appearances.

Her contribution, alongside strong performances from Agnes John and other senior swimmers, ensured Nigeria maintained its competitive edge across all divisions.

The championship, which featured top teams from Ghana, Senegal and other regional rivals, provided a platform for the country’s emerging talents to compete against some of Africa’s best.

Coach Abiodun Ojomo expressed pride in the team’s achievements, describing the results as evidence of a system that is beginning to yield results.

“These results prove that our youth programme is working. We’re not just participating anymore, we’re competing, breaking records and building future champions,” he said.

Leader of the delegation, Taiwo Oriss, also commended the National Sports Commission for its continued support, noting that consistent investment in facilities and athlete development is vital for sustaining progress in the sport.
