Nigeria’s table tennis star, Quadri Aruna, was eliminated from the WTT China Smash on Sunday after a 3-0 loss to Denmark’s Anders Lind, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The world number 14 sent the highest-ranked African player packing in the round of 64 after edging him in three sets.
The first set ended 12-10 while the second and third finished 13-11.
After the game, Aruna, who reached the round 32 of the same event last year admitted he faced a difficult opponent.
“It’s the first time I played against him. It’s really hard. The biggest problem was his serve. I think if I was able to put some of the serves a little bit better, probably things might have changed in my favour. But overall, I think I did my best, which is much more important to me,” he told CGTN Sports Scene.
Despite the defeat, he also appreciated the Chinese fans for their support.
“I must say thanks to all the Chinese fans. They kept me going all the time. They supported me a lot, and I want to say thanks to them.”
The Nigerian star is expected to lead the country’s 10-player contingent to the 2025 African Championships, which will be played from October 12 to 19 in Tunisia.
He would be joined in the men’s team by Taiwo Mati, Olajide Omotayo, two-time West African champion Matthew Kuti, and rising talent Abdulbasit Abdulfatai.
The women’s team features promising young players such as Favour Ojo, Aishat Rabiu, Kabirat Ayoola, and Sukurat Aiyelabegan. Veteran Ajoke Ojomu will lead the squad as captain in Tunis.
