Abinusawa wins double Ivy conference gold

By Daily Sports Nigeria on March 3, 2026

Forehan Abinusawa delivered a commanding sprint double at the Ivy League Indoor Championships, winning gold in both the 60m and 200m and earning recognition as the women’s Co-Outstanding Track Performer, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Representing the University of Pennsylvania at The Armory, Abinusawa first laid down a marker in the 60m heats, where she produced a personal best of 7.22s a day before. The performance was the fastest qualifying time, ahead of Juliette Kosmont and Saige Forbes, and established a new Ivy League record in the event before the medals were even decided.

She returned for the final to complete the job, running 7.25s to win the title, finishing comfortably ahead of Kosmont, who clocked 7.40s.

The double triumph was sealed later in the 200m, where Abinusawa ran a new personal best of 23.30s to grab another clear victory, with Alyssa Jackson second in 23.62s.

Her achievement came during a successful weekend for Pennsylvania athletics, which also saw freshman Jessica Oji named the women’s Most Outstanding Field Performer after breaking the all-time Ivy League and African record in the shot put.

The 22-year-old’s rise has unfolded against the backdrop of a recent change in international allegiance.

Formerly representing the United States, she became eligible to compete for Nigeria in national representative competitions from March 6, 2024, under World Athletics regulations.

Within weeks of that transition, she contributed to Nigeria’s gold medal in the 4x100m relay at the African Games in Accra, where the quartet clocked 43.05s at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in March 2024.

The Ivy League double reinforces her status as one of Nigeria’s leading sprint prospects in the collegiate system.

By breaking the conference 60m record in the heats and returning to secure both titles, Abinusawa demonstrated the blend of speed and composure required at championship level.
