He made his full international debut on April 22, 2000, in a 4–0 home win in Lagos against Eritrea in the qualification for the 2002 African Cup of Nations. He also scored his first international goal in an away win against Namibia on June 16, 2001, in the same qualification campaign.

‘The Yak’, as he was fondly called by his teammates, made Nigeria’s squad to the 2002 and 2010 World Cups. He is infamously remembered by fans for missing a sitter during Nigeria’s crucial last group game against South Korea at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Aside from his national team credentials, Aiyegbeni also holds the top spot among Nigerian goal scorers in the EPL with 95 goals. He played for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, Leicester and Blackburn Rovers in England.
