Team Lagos leads the medals table as the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba comes to an end on Saturday (today) with finals in wrestling, judo and athletics events, Saturday PUNCH reports.

According to the medals table made available by the media and publicity sub-committee for the Youth Games, Lagos sits comfortably at the top with 47 gold, 28 silver and 22 bronze medals.

Team Edo occupy second position with 33 gold, 14 silver and 22 bronze medals, while Delta State are third with 31 gold, 36 silver and 33 bronze medals.

Thirty-two states have registered their presence on the medals table.

The closing ceremony begins on Saturday morning with the finals of the 4×100 metres relay for boys and girls, as well as the 4×400 metres mixed relay.

Among the standout performers at the Games was Faith Chukwuma of Delta State, who won the girls’ 200 metres race and expressed gratitude for her victory.

“I was the youngest among the athletes that represented Delta State at the just concluded National Sports Festival that was held in Abeokuta. I was the bronze medallist in the 200 metres at age 13,” Chukwuma said.

“Thereafter, I made up my mind that I was going to win the 200 metres race, and I finally did. I just want to say thank you to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the chairman of the state sports commission, Onoriode, my coach and my mother, who supported me with prayers.”

The 13-year-old, who was shedding tears of joy after finishing the race, also clinched a silver medal in the 100 metres race.

“My teammates and I also won three gold medals,” she added.

Saturday’s programme features finals in wrestling, judo and athletics events as the Games draw to a close with a closing ceremony.
