Nollywood actress Jaiye Kuti (Dr) reflects on her flair for athletics while growing up, as well as what fuels her interest in women’s sports, in this interview with ABIODUN ADEWALE
Can you share some memories of your exposure to sports while growing up?
Growing up, sports were a delightful part of my childhood. I fondly remember participating in track and field events, particularly high jump, with friends and watching track events on TV with my family. The camaraderie and excitement of the crowd were infectious and truly sparked joy.
Did you ever consider pursuing a career in sports?
While acting was my true calling, I did have a soft spot for athletics, particularly sprinting. The thrill of competition and the sheer speed were captivating.
So, why did you stop?
The arts eventually claimed my heart, offering a different but equally fulfilling rush. At the end of the day, it is about fulfilment.
Which football or sports teams do you support, and what influenced your choices?
In Nigeria, I support the Super Eagles, of course. Internationally, I have a liking for Chelsea, influenced by their style and spirit on the field. Choices often stem from the players, the energy, and sometimes just the overall vibe of the team.
Have you ever been to a stadium to watch a live match?
Yes, I’ve had the chance to watch some live matches. Watching a game live is a completely different experience—the energy, the fans, the collective heartbeat of the stadium. One memorable game was a local league match in Lagos, which was electrifying.
Who are your favourite Nigerian sports stars?
Among my favourite Nigerian sports stars are Rashidi Yekini, Nwankwo Kanu, Jay-Jay Okocha, for their undeniable flair and Asisat Oshoala, who has done wonders in women’s football. Their passion and skills are both inspiring.
The Nigerian women’s national teams in both football and basketball have made remarkable progress in recent weeks. The Super Falcons won the WAFCON for the 10th time, while the D’Tigress won a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title. What are your thoughts on their achievements in Africa?
The achievements of the Super Falcons and the D’Tigress are simply extraordinary. I am aware that they have achieved more than their male counterparts. Although I understand the men’s and women’s games are different in terms of toughness. The Super Falcons winning their 10th WAFCON title, while the D’Tigress have won five Women’s AfroBasket titles consecutively, is a testament to their dedication and prowess. They continue to make us incredibly proud.
What do you think about the presidential rewards and recognition these female athletes have received recently?
Recognising their achievements is crucial, and the rewards signify the nation’s appreciation.
Do you also feel the $100,000 cash gift was too much or even inadequate?
Whether $100,000 is adequate is subjective, but acknowledging their efforts is a step in the right direction.
In your opinion, what more can be done to support and promote women in sports in Nigeria?
To better support women in sports, the stakeholders must look into increasing funding, improving facilities, and fostering grassroots programmes. These are essential. Visibility and representation also play vital roles in inspiring the next generation. That is why I Iove someone like Oshoala. She has not just put the country’s name on the global map, but her name is out there as one of the best players Africa has produced. My daughter also plays football and basketball actively, so I am very passionate about women’s sports.
As someone in the entertainment industry, how do you view the intersection of sports and entertainment in Nigeria today?
The intersection of sports and entertainment here is fascinating. Both industries stir immense emotions and community pride, weaving stories that inspire and entertain beyond the boundaries of culture and age. Sports and entertainment are where you sometimes forgive your enemies just to be together for the sake of watching football or movies.
Do you think sports could play a bigger role in Nollywood storytelling?
Sports can indeed enrich Nollywood storytelling by highlighting themes of perseverance, teamwork, and triumph. I would love to be involved in a project that brings these stories to life, emphasising the power of sports as a narrative.
Finally, how do you personally stay active and fit?
For staying fit, I enjoy walking, swimming a lot, and occasionally I engage in cardiovascular exercises. These activities keep me centred and energised, which is vital for maintaining my well-being as an actress.
