Nwankwo, Ezechukwu dominate African Schools 100m

By Daily Sports Nigeria on August 4, 2025

Rosemary Nwankwo shocked her more fancied compatriot, Miracle Ezechukwu, to win gold in the girls’ 100m final at the inaugural African School Games in Algeria, PUNCH Sports Extra Reports.

Nwankwo powered to the finish in 11.75s to emerge champion, relegating pre-race favourite Ezechukwu to silver in 11.83s, as Nigeria completed a dominant 1–2 finish.

Congo Brazzaville’s Ndoulou Boukama took bronze in 12.19s.

The upset was a major breakthrough for 17-year-old Nwankwo, who had often finished behind Ezechukwu in previous competitions.

The win also served as payback for her silver-medal showing behind Ezechukwu in the 200m at the recent African U-18 and U-20 Championships in Abeokuta.

Having trained alongside each other in Abuja under Nigeria’s youth athletics programme, the duo had entered the final as the clear favourites, having posted the fastest semi-final times.

Nwankwo had set a personal best of 11.72s in her heat, while Ezechukwu matched her eventual final time of 11.83s to qualify.

Ezechukwu, who recently sat for her WAEC examinations, arrived in Algeria fresh from a triple-gold sweep in Abeokuta, where she solidified her status as one of Africa’s top young sprinters. But it was Nwankwo who seized the moment on Day 2 in Algeria.

Their performances were among the highlights of the day for Team Nigeria, who added four medals to their tally in athletics, one gold, two silver, and one bronze, to bring the total to six.

In other results, Jecinter Andrew won silver in the girls’ 400m after a strong run, while Faye Perfect won bronze in the boys’ 400m following a late surge down the final straight.

The African School Games, organised by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa in collaboration with the International School Sport Federation and the International Olympic Committee, are being held across four cities in Algeria and continue until August 5.
