Manchester United have reportedly opened discussions with the representatives of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen as the club intensifies its search for a top-class forward ahead of next season.
According to Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato in a post on Monday, Osimhen, who has enjoyed a prolific spell at Galatasaray this season, is currently on a dry loan from Napoli and has scored 33 goals and provided 8 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.
Despite his impressive performances in Turkey, a permanent stay at the Istanbul club appears unlikely due to financial constraints.
“Although it now seems unlikely that he will stay in Turkey, the Nigerian striker is attracting strong interest from the Premier League. Conveniently, Manchester United are seriously considering him for next season and have already held talks with his representatives,” the report stated.
The 26-year-old Lagos-born striker has attracted attention from several quarters, including the Saudi Pro League. Last summer, Al Hilal reportedly made a €50 million offer for Osimhen, which did not materialise. This time, Saudi club Neom have shown interest, but Osimhen is said to be leaning towards a move to the English Premier League.
The financial demands involved in securing Osimhen’s services are significant. The striker is said to be seeking a salary of €12 million per year, a figure only a handful of Premier League clubs can accommodate.
Manchester United, who are reportedly dissatisfied with their current attacking options, see Osimhen as a viable option if they fail to land their top target, Victor Gyökeres. Liam Delap of Ipswich is also being monitored by the Red Devils.
Although still under contract with Napoli, Osimhen’s future could be determined by United’s willingness to meet the Italian club’s asking price, which is expected to exceed €75 million including bonuses.
