Nigerian boxing legend Charles Nwokolo will be inducted as one of the World Boxing Council Legends at a grand ceremony on June 22, in Los Angeles, USA, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The former African and Commonwealth champion, known to his boxing fans as ‘Dick Tiger’, made a significant impact in the boxing world during his illustrious career that saw him compete at the highest levels of the sport.
Nwokolo’s journey to prominence began at age 13 when he switched from football to boxing, a decision that would change the trajectory of his life as he Nwokolo became a formidable boxer who would go on to represent Nigeria on the international stage.
In 1983, at the Commonwealth Games, he secured a gold medal and was honoured as the Best Boxer of the tournament. The following year, he represented Nigeria at the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles, where he reached the quarter-finals in a controversial bout.
During the Olympic quarter-final match, Nwokolo knocked down his opponent twice but was adjudged to have lost, causing outrage with Nigeria threatening to withdraw all its athletes from the Games.
After turning professional in 1986, Nwokolo quickly established himself by becoming both the African Champion and Commonwealth Champion in the same year. He moved to Los Angeles, USA to continue his professional career and finished with an impressive record of 31 wins, with 20 coming by way of knockout.
Following his professional career, Nwokolo fulfilled his long-term plan of opening a boxing gym. Since 2006, he has owned and operated Tiger Boxing Gym in Hollywood, where he trains boxers of all ages and abilities, from 5-year-olds to 75-year-old Parkinson’s patients.
The Nwokolo boxing dynasty now spans two generations, with both father and son committed to promoting boxing and uplifting the youth of Nigeria. Charles continues to send equipment to his former teammates, who are now coaches in Nigeria, while Emeka also donated gloves to kids last year during a visit to the country.
The induction into the WBC Legends’ Hall of Fame on the 17th anniversary represents a fitting recognition of Nwokolo’s contributions to the sport both as a competitor and as a trainer passing on his knowledge to the next generation of boxers.
