Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is sponsoring Skate Lagos athletes to participate in the International Skate-a-Thon in Calabar 2025, where they will proudly represent the state.
The initiative underscores the governor’s commitment to promoting sports development and excellence across the state, even for sporting disciplines not traditionally among the most prominent.
Skate Team Lagos is set to depart for Calabar on Tuesday (today), flying with Air Peace, as they prepare for their opening games on Wednesday.
Although Skate Lagos isn’t among the 44 recognised sports associations in Lagos State, the governor’s efforts to promote athletic growth in non-traditional sports have been widely commended.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon Adebanji Atewogboye, recommended Skate Lagos for sponsorship, highlighting the governor’s visionary approach to nurturing talents at the grassroots level.
This support comes at a significant time as skateboarding has recently been included in the Olympic Games, providing a global platform for athletes to compete and showcase their skills. The development has brought increased recognition and opportunities to the sport, inspiring more participation across Lagos.
The Lagos State Sports Commission has praised Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s vision for youth and sports development, which aims to empower young people through various sporting activities.
Hon Atewogboye has been implementing various initiatives to keep Lagos youth engaged through sports while promoting athletic development across the state’s sports hub.
The sponsorship of Team Lagos to the International Skate-a-Thon represents another step in the state’s growing commitment to diversifying its sports portfolio and providing opportunities for athletes across various disciplines.
