Nigeria witnessed its first official Mixed 4x100m relay competition on the penultimate day of the MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays Lagos, with Team Continental claiming the historic inaugural title in impressive fashion, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The newly sanctioned event, which was officially approved by World Athletics last month and will feature at next month’s World Relays in China, headlined day three of the competition alongside the Mixed 4x400m relay finals and several individual sprint events.

Team Continental’s quartet of Iyanuoluwa Bada, Janet Adesiyan, Chidera Ezeakor and Favour Ashe delivered a commanding performance in the Mixed 4x100m final, stopping the clock at 42.91s to establish a national-leading time. They finished comfortably ahead of Zabranto Athletics (44.69s), D’Victors A (44.88s) and Benin Republic (45.22s).

The Mixed 4x400m event also produced an impressive display as the formidable team of Miracle Donald-Uwem, Samson Nathaniel, Patience Okon-George and Emmanuel Ojeli stormed to victory in 3:21.63s, outpacing Team MTN (3:31.09s) and St. Christy Track Club (3:33.96s).

In the junior categories, Team MTN’s Ezekiel Asuquo caused a major upset in the men’s 400m final, handing favourite Gafar Badmus his first defeat of the season. Asuquo clinched the title with a personal best of 47.26s, while Badmus settled for second place in 47.47s, followed by Eniola Shiro in 48.53s.

Toheebat Jimoh extended Team MTN’s dominance in the Junior Women’s 400m, executing a well-strategised race to pull away from the field and secure victory in 55.7h. Bamidele Aishat (57.2h) and Victory Solomon (57.6h) completed the podium positions.

The senior men’s 200m semifinals saw Emmanuel Ojeli emerge as the fastest qualifier with a time of 21.07s, setting the stage for an intriguing final against Chidera Ezeakor (21.30s) and Thankgod Igube (21.54s).

Two-time Olympian Patience Okon-George continued her impressive form, leading the women’s 200m semifinals with a season’s best of 24.03s ahead of Iyanuoluwa Bada (24.20s) and Miracle Donald-Uwem (24.53s).

In the junior men’s category, John Caleb positioned himself for a potential sprint double, clocking a new personal best of 21.19s to top the qualifiers. Qudus Akintoye (21.38s) and Ezekiel Asuquo (21.50s) followed as the second and third fastest qualifiers respectively.

The junior women’s 200m semifinals saw Hafsoh Bisola, Lucy Nwankwo (24.99s) and Mariam Jegede (25.23s) emerge as the overall fastest qualifiers.
