NPFL: Rivers will put pressure on Remo, says Finidi

By Daily Sports Nigeria on April 9, 2025

Rivers United coach Finidi George insists the former champions will put more pressure on league leaders Remo Stars as they hope to topple them and win their second Nigeria Premier Football League title.

The 2022 champions cut the gap between them and Remo to five points after beating them 1-0 during their meeting in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

An 84th-minute header by Bolu Sholumade was all Rivers United needed to edge Daniel Ogunmodede’s side in the top-of-the-table clash.

But Remo Stars have the chance to extend their lead on the table on Wednesday (today) when they take on Lobi Stars in a rescheduled game in Enugu.

Finidi is however unfazed by their rivals chances of extending the gap between them again, as he looks to keep getting the results at home and away in their remaining six games of the season.

“After this game, I think we have to see how we can win away from home and we can close up the gap. We will also be looking out for their next result and we will pile the pressure on them,” Finidi said after Sunday’s win.

“We just have to keep pushing to keep piling the pressure on Remo. We will see how things go but for us, we want to keep winning.”

Finidi, an ex-international joined the Pride of Rivers at the start of the season after a short stint as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

The former Ajax man returned to the country in 2021 to take up the helm at Enyimba, leading them to their ninth NPFL title in 2023 and he hopes to get another piece of silverware for Rivers United, who were formed from the coalition of his boyhood club Sharks FC and Dolphins.
