NWFL: Edo Queens beat Abia Angels in Umuahia

By Daily Sports Nigeria on March 27, 2025

Nigeria Women Football League champions Edo Queens defeated hosts Abia Angels 2-1 at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Wednesday.

Edo Queens’ winger Osigwu Goodness scored the opening goal in the 35 minutes through a penalty kick.

The host team came back stronger into the games, but the defending champions banked on experience to ward off the Angels’ attack.

They made incursions into the  Queens 18-yard box but goalkeeper Ademola Morufa was on hand to save her team’s blushes.

On the resumption of the second half, Edo Queens scored the second goal through Esther Moses in the 61st minute, silencing the Abia Angels’ supporters. However, Abia Angels got a consolation goal in the 76th minute through a penalty by Lucky Mary to make it 2-1.

Efforts by both teams to score more goals were futile as the visiting Queens got the three points at stake. With this victory, Edo Queens remain unbeaten with 23 points from nine games and lead group A of the abridged league.

Speaking after the match, Coach Moses Aduku of Edo Queens commended the players for taking the goal-scoring chances in the game.

He said, “First, I must say that the turf did not allow us to play good football. But I commend my girls for taking the chances they had. The Abia Ladies were also good because they were used to this field.

“Presently, our focus is on our next game against Heartland Queens next Wednesday. We take it one game at a time. When we are done with the Heartland game, then we can talk about others. I want to urge my players to continue with this winning mentality.”

“My dream is to play again in the CAF Champions League having lost in the semi-final of the last edition. We have to work seriously on our girls, but the first thing is to win the Super Six.”
