Remo Stars continued to hold firmly to their lead at the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League table on Sunday thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Plateau United in Ikenne, The PUNCH reports.
Mid-season signing and former Sunshine Stars striker, Samson Olasupo, marked his return to the Nigerian topflight with a goal in the 74th minute of the game to seal the win for Daniel Ogunmodede’s side.
The hosts laboured before and after their goal during the encounter and were also reduced to 10 men in the closing stages after captain Junior Nduka was sent off for a second bookable offence.
The captain had also missed a first half penalty while Sikiru Alimi also had a headed goal ruled out for offside in the second half.
Remo Stars’ persistence however paid off before the end of the game, with Olasupo drilling home the lone goal on his debut for the Ikenne side.
Thanks to the win, Remo Stars now have 54 points after 27 games, 12 points ahead of second-placed Rivers United who are in Ibadan to face third-placed 3SC on Monday (today).
Elsewhere in Lagos on Sunday, new boys Ikorodu City are fast cementing their topflight status ahead of next season, thanks to a 2-0 win over Heartland at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.\
A first half goal by Leonard Ngenge plus another one in the second half by Ayomide Cole did the job for Nurudeen Aweroro’s side.
Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle also watched Kano Pillars 2-1 win over Rangers International in Kano.
Rabiu Ali and Jerry Alex responded for the hosts after they were stunned by Bashir Usman’s 33rd-minute opener for the visitors.
Still playing under interim coach Ahmed Garba, Pillars have now won four of their last five games and have moved to fourth in the table with 41 points.
Joseph Atule also scored the only goal as Enyimba recorded a rare away win in the ongoing season with a 1-0 win over Niger Tornadoes in Lafia.
