According to the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, new Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle will be in Ikenne, Ogun State on Tuesday (today), to begin his supervisory role of the Super Eagles B as they continue preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship tournament in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The tournament will be played from February 1-28 in the three East African countries with Nigeria seeking their first title.
Chelle was unveiled on Monday at a brief ceremony at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja by the NFF, one week after his announcement as the 37th coach of the Super Eagles and his immediate role is to supervise the Super Eagles B who have been under the tutelage of Remo Stars coach Daniel Ogunmodede and his Rangers International counterpart, Fidelis Ilechukwu.
“Eric is coming with three assistants that will work with him. By the grace of God, he will be in Ikenne on Tuesday to be with the CHAN Eagles,” Gusau said during the unveiling.
“He is going to be with the CHAN team in a supervisory role. He is not the one that selected the players but we mandated him to be part of the team and give them the support and from there he can watch them and see how some of the players can make the Super Eagles too.”
The ex-Mali coach is expected to work with his three assistants as well as the duo Ogunmodede and Ilechukwu.
“We have some other coaches that have been working that are going to be part of him. We need to inject our people to make sure they have a good interaction to see how they can support him and make sure he understands the mentality of Nigerian football.”
Ogunmodede and Ilechukwu led Nigeria to the tournament after edging Ghana 3-1 on aggregate.
Nigeria has never won the tournament, having finished third at the 2014 edition in South Africa before losing the final against hosts Morocco four years later.
