NPFL: Ideye upbeat about Enyimba’s chance

By Daily Sports Nigeria on January 3, 2025

New Enyimba striker and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner, Brown Ideye, remains confident that the nine-time Nigerian champions still have their destiny in their hands despite their recent struggles in all competitions, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The People’s Elephants are currently ninth in the Nigeria Premier Football League with 24 points, although with three games at hand and are on the brink of elimination in the CAF Confederation Cup, having secured just one draw in their first three group matches.

The 36-year-old has just joined the club until the end of the 2024/25 season, making his return to the Nigerian top-flight after 16 years.

Ideye was a second-half substitute on his Enyimba debut on Tuesday, but it wasn’t memorable enough, as his debut game ended in a goalless draw at home against Bendel Insurance.

It was also coach Stanley Eguma’s first game in charge of the club but his effect, coupled with Ideye’s introduction couldn’t prevent them from extending their winless run to 13 games in all competitions.

Despite the result, Ideye remains optimistic that the team will bounce back when the league resumes.

“We still have a lot to do because the league is still young,” Ideye said after the goalless draw.

“The first round has just ended, and we still have the second round. We are finding it difficult to score goals but we have to work together as a team and make sure we correct our mistakes.”

Before joining Enyimba, Ideye had been without a club since leaving Kuwaiti side Al Yarmouk in 2022.
