After guiding Flamingos to a 4-1 whitewash of New Zealand in Wednesday night’s Group A opener at Cibao Stadium in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, Nigeria coach, Bankole Olowookere, looks to secure more positive results at the 2024 FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup in Dominican Republic, The PUNCH reports.
The emphatic win set the African giants at the top of the group, which also has houses Dominican Republic and Ecuador.
Nigeria came into the tournament with high expectations after their impressive third-place finish at the 2022 edition in India.
Speaking in a post-match press conference, Olowookere said the team was focused on getting more positive results.
“We kicked off our campaign in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic with an impressive 4-1 win against New Zealand. I am grateful for your support, Nigerians. Let’s hope for more positive results ahead, he said.
The Flamingos return to action in their second group game against Ecuador scheduled for Saturday, October 19, before facing the Dominican Republic on October 22 as they push for qualification to the knockout stages.
Nigeria have participated in every edition of the competition since its inception in 2008, reaching the quarterfinals in 2010, 2012, and 2014. They broke the last eight jinx in the 2022 edition by defeating the USA in the quarterfinals to reach their first-ever semi-finals.
