Nine-time Nigerian women’s basketball league champions, First Bank, have made a strong start to another title challenge, winning their first two games of the 2024 Final 8 playoffs comprehensively, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The series dunked off Thursday at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, with the Elephant Girls winning their opening match against the hard-fighting Royal Aces 76-46 before thumping Titans of Abuja 70-45 on Friday.
Inspired by the team’s captain, Theresa Ebiega, the Elephant Girls overcame a slow start and took apart their opponents in the first game to the excitement of their supporters.
Speaking after their first win, Ebiega said the team was ready to give their all to return the Elephant Girls to the high echelon where they belong.
“We are First Bank; we must come first in all our matches. This is our dream, and we are going to achieve it,” she said.
The team’s coach, Taye Adeniyi, echoed Ebiega’s resolve, asserting the team will do everything it can to return to the number one position when it comes to basketball in Nigeria.
After their second win over Titans, First Bank will face another challenge against Customs on Saturday (today).
They are campaigning in the Final 8 after a sizzling campaign in the Atlantic Conference in Akure, where they won all their seven matches.
First Bank dominated the early days of the Zenith Women’s Basketball League, winning five consecutive titles between 2005 and 2009 before adding more titles in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
