Abdulahi Shehu Allays Injury Fears

By Daily Sports on December 29, 2021

Super Eagles defender Abdullahi Shehu has dismissed fears he may miss part of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations following a knock he picked up on Sunday. He added he would be in Nigeria on Tuesday.

The versatile right-back suffered an injury during the first half of Omonia Nicosia’s 4-2 loss to city rivals APOEL on Boxing Day and was replaced by Paris Psaltis. Shehu felt discomfort in his thigh after a clash with an APOEL defender in the 34th minute but despite efforts to continue playing on, he was substituted just three minutes after.

The situation however raises concern with the AFCON just 12 days to kick off. Coach Austin Eguavoen is already sweating on the fitness of Eagles trio Wilfred Ndidi, Victor Osimhen and Leon Balogun, who are all recovering from various injuries.

Speaking with AOIFootball.com, the right-back assured he would be fit for the AFCON while assuring his substitution was to take precautionary measures. “Not a good way to end the year because I would have wanted us to get a victory over our fierce rivals. Now I shift my focus to the National team and I would arrive in Nigeria tomorrow (Tuesday) and get set for the camp proper. ”I always a good feeling to be called up by your Nation. I am always honoured to play and represent Nigeria and I can’t wait to see the guys again. “It’s not a serious injury, I just had a knock on my left thigh but I am fine the substitution was just precautionary.”

The former Kano Pillars defender is set for his second appearance at the continental showpiece having been named in interim boss Eguavoen’s 28-man list. He was part of the Eagles squad that finished third at the 2019 AFCON tournament in Egypt. (Punch)
