Nottingham Forest’s Ola Aina has been named in the Premier League Team of the Week following his stellar performance in their shocking 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Nigerian defender figured prominently in Forest’s resolute defending, helping his side secure their first league win at the Merseyside ground in 55 years.
Aina’s disciplined display caught the eye of Premier League legend Alan Shearer, who included him in his select XI for the Game Week.
“Part of a fine defensive display from Forest, Aina kept the in-form Luis Diaz quiet, which is no mean feat,” Shearer remarked on the 26-year-old’s performance.
The former Chelsea youth product played the full 90 minutes and was instrumental in neutralising Liverpool’s attack. His most crucial contribution came when he cleared a goal-bound effort off the line, denying Diaz in the first half.
Aina’s inclusion in the Team of the Week underscores the impact of Nuno Espirito Santo’s perfect game plan.
The Portuguese tactician’s strategy of defending in a low block and utilising pace on the counter-attack proved effective, with substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi netting the winner.
Forest’s Anfield heroics saw two other defenders, Murillo and Alex Moreno, join Aina in Shearer’s selection. Midfielder Elliot Anderson and manager Nuno Espirito Santo also earned spots on the team featuring players from seven different clubs.
Notable inclusions in the Team of the Week were Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez, for his penalty save against AFC Bournemouth, Manchester United’s Matthijs de Ligt, for his goal-scoring performance at Southampton, and Arsenal’s Gabriel, for his defensive prowess and set-piece threat.
Up front, Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins were recognised for their goalscoring exploits.
As Forest continue their unbeaten start to the season, Aina’s recognition in the Team of the Week serves as a testament to his growing influence in the Premier League and his importance to Nottingham Forest’s defensive solidity.
