Odion Ighalo scored on Saturday for Watford in their 2-2 pre-season friendly against French club Lorient.
Ighalo netted on the hour to temporarily put his side 2-0 up at Vicarage Road after club captain Troy Deeney had put the Hornets ahead with a well-taken penalty on the stroke of halftime.
The Super Eagles attacker nonchalantly chipped past the Lorient goalkeeper, Benjamin Lecompte, following exceptional work by Etienne Capoue for what turned out to be his only goal in pre-season.
Ighalo spoke about his performance as well as his expectations on the new season with the Hornets after the workout against the French club.
“It is okay. We have put in a lot of work since July 3 (when we commenced pre-season).
“We have a new gaffer (Walter Mazzarri) who is trying to implement his new tactics with the team.
“We are happy with our work so far and we can’t wait for the new season to start next weekend so we can start moving,” he said.
The attacker believes his goal against Lorient will aid in boosting his confidence levels.
“As a striker, (scoring) goals will always build your confidence.
“However, even when I do not score, the team winning matches is always more important and that is why I will always give my best.
“In all our pre-season games, I put in my best and even the gaffer saw that; it was just unfortunate that the goals were not coming in previous games.
“We are still trying to know ourselves with some new players coming in as we try to embrace the philosophy of the gaffer,” he said.
