Nigeria’s para-badminton players, Bolaji Eniola and Chigozie Nnanna, have progressed to the quarterfinals of the event at the ongoing Paralympics in Paris after winning their second games on Friday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Competing in the women’s singles, Eniola continued her impressive form, defeating Australia’s Celine Aurelie Vinot 2-0 (21-8, 21-14), her second consecutive win, securing her place in the quarterfinals on her first outing at the Games.
She made a strong start in the women’s singles SL3 Group Stage on Thursday by defeating India’s Kaur Mandeep and dominating from the beginning, with the game ending 21-8, 21-14 in her favour.
Meanwhile, Nnanna, striving to match Bolaji’s success a few hours later, faced Indonesia’s Fredy Setiawan in the men’s singles, where he won 2-0 (21-12, 24-22), also his second.
On Thursday, Nnanna also delivered a great performance in his first game in the men’s singles SL4 Group Stage, outclassing Germany’s Marcel Adam 2-0 (21-12, 21-15).
Both players got Nigeria to a good start in the event, as the country’s 23-athlete contingent to the Games will hope to build on their previous successes.
At the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Team Nigeria won 10 medals.
Since making its Paralympic debut at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, where they secured three gold medals, Nigeria has amassed a total of 80 medals: 40 gold, 19 silver, and 21 bronze.
