Finidi begins work at Rivers, holds first training session

Rivers United coach Finidi George has swung into action at Rivers United, taking charge of his first training session on Monday in Port Harcourt as the club begin preparations for the 2024/25 season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 53-year-old was appointed last week Wednesday following his resignation as the head coach of the Super Eagles last month.

“Finidi George takes charge. Our new technical manager leads his first training session at Garden City Sports Complex,” the club shared on Monday.

In the training photos shared, Finidi was spotted dishing instructions to the players while he was also seen discussing with his technical crew, including coach Evans Ogenyi who led the team until the end of last season.

However, he doesn’t have the full complement of the squad yet, with the club still negotiating with about 13 out-of-contract players while they also try to bring in new players.

So far, Rivers United have been linked with Bendel Insurance goalkeeper Amas Obasogie – who has stated his commitment to the Benin side – as well as his teammate Divine Nwachukwu. Others are Doma United keeper Kingdom Osayi and Sporting Lagos striker Jonathan Alukwu.

Some of the out-of-contract players at Rivers are goalkeeper Abiodun Akande, captain Nyima Nwagua and Kazie Enyinnaya.

Finidi, who signed a two-year deal with the club has revealed that his immediate target is to return the team to the continent next season.

Rivers United played in the CAF Confederation Cup last season but couldn’t go past the quarter-finals stage.

They also finished eighth in the NPFL with 53 points.

The Nigeria striker made this assertion while reflecting on his protracted summer transfer saga that saw Napoli desperately sell him off to Al-Ahli and Chelsea in the embers of the window, with the latter his long-term choice destination offering peanuts for his signature. The 25-year-old said that he was prepared to remain at Napoli for another three or four months and secure a move to one of his suitors in January, reiterating the relief ushered by the Galatasaray offer. “I had plans to stay there and wait for three or four months and leave in January, but I think for me it was fair also to stay there because I wouldn’t let anyone decide for me,” Osimhen told Turkish media, including TRT Spor, from the Galatasaray training centre.
