Odegbami skeptical about Dream Team chances at Rio Olympics

Former Super Eagles captain, Chief Segun Odegbami, has shown skepticism about what to expect from the Dream Team VI in the forthcoming Rio Olympics.

The 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner with the Green Eagles, who was popularly known as “Mathematical 7” during his playing days, said he does not see a light at the end of the tunnel for the Dream Team in Rio De Janerio.

Speaking with Daily Sports at this office in Yaba, Odegbami who won 46 caps and scored 23 goals for the Nigeria National Team said “I cannot make an assessment on the team. The team is not stable, they are not treated well, stories coming out of Atlanta training camp are horrible stories nobody wants to report, their morale and expectation is low, they are not encouraged, I do not have much hope on them.”

However, the 63-year-old football tactician and writer, who had on two occasions contested for the presidency of the Nigerian Football Federation raised hopes for Nigeria’s chances in Rio when he said “But in 1996, when the Dream Team surprised the world by winning the gold medal in Atlanta, we did not give them much chance, because they actually just lost the last match (in Nigeria) against Togo by 3-0, and nobody gave them a chance, but they went and won. So you cannot write Nigeria off.”
