Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu, believes that if John Mikel Obi, employ his wealth of experience and assist in instilling commitment to the national U-23 players, the coach Samson Siasia tutored side will excel at the Rio Olympics football event.
Speaking with The Guardian, Shorunmu stated that including the Chelsea of England star, as one of the over aged players to the Dream Team VI camp, was a good step in the right direction, saying that the presence of the Super Eagles captain was capable of raising the spirit of the young players to give their best while prosecuting matches in the championship.
The erstwhile Eagles goalkeeper trainer, explained that the Dream Team desire to win medals at the games, lies on the ability of the players to remain focused and determined to prove a point to the world that Nigeria is still a force to recon with in football despite any odd that comes their way .
He also commended the Sports Ministry for appointing Mikel the Team captain of the Olympic team, adding that the responsibility will propel the one time Lyn Oslo of Norway midfielder to raise the standard of his game and also carry along other Nigeria athletes to work hard for medals at the Olympics.
“Inviting Mikel to the U-23 team is a good step in the right direction. His impact in the team will assist Nigeria excel at the football event. As the oldest player in the team, Mikel wealth of experience will be highly needed. At this point in time, Mikel’s love for the game of football and the nation should be exhibited while representing the nation at the games. The Dream Team have all it takes to outshine any opponents , if the players give their best, ”he said.
Nigeria has been placed in Group B alongside Sweden, Colombia and Japan at the group matches of the Rio Olympics.
The Nigeria team who are Winners of the Olympics 1996 football event, will hope to go past an organized Swedish team and a fast Japanese side to advance out of the group.
